The SF List: What's Actually Worth Your Time

I made myself a rule a while back: no more scrolling past ten Instagram posts about "hidden gem" SF events only to find out they happened last Tuesday. So I did the digging — every date below is confirmed, every link goes somewhere real, and I built this list the way I plan my own weekends: mostly things for me, with enough kid stuff sprinkled in that nobody in the house feels left out.

Here's what's actually on the calendar between now and mid-September.

1. "SOMA Nights" Block Party + Night Market — Thursday, Aug. 27, 5–9 p.m., Folsom Street (6th–12th). Free monthly street party with local vendors, food, art, and this month a plant swap and a petting zoo. Grab a friend, wander, no plan required.

2. BonPOP: 5th Anniversary Bon Odori Festival — Sunday, Aug. 30, 2–6 p.m., SF Botanical Garden Fountain Plaza. Taiko drumming, Bon Odori dancing, yukata dressing, lanterns. Free for SF residents — this is the family one where everyone, including you, actually has fun.

3. SF Zoo Free Admission Day — Wednesday, Sept. 2, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. (last entry 4 p.m.), Great Highway between Skyline and Sloat. Free for SF residents with ID. Get there early — these dates move fast once word gets out.

4. Illuminate LIVE at Golden Gate Bandshell — Wednesday, Sept. 2, 4–7 p.m., Golden Gate Park. Free outdoor concert, part of a season with 125+ free shows through mid-November. Bring a blanket, skip the ticket line entirely.

5. SoundBath: Return to Rhythm — Thursday, Sept. 3, Glow Yoga & Wellness. An hour of lying down and doing absolutely nothing productive. If your nervous system has been on a group text since June, this is your intervention.

6. Union Square Dances — Fridays through Oct. 16, 5–8 p.m., Union Square. Free lesson, then open dancing — the style rotates (salsa, swing, country-western, tango). Round up the girls, skip dinner reservations, dance instead.

7. Flower Piano — Sept. 10–20, 10 a.m.–6 p.m., SF Botanical Garden. Twelve pianos hidden across 55 acres, open play plus scheduled performances. Free for SF residents. This one's for the kids, but I'd go even without them.

8. "Chinatown Night Market" — Friday, Sept. 11, 5–9 p.m., Grant Avenue. Food stalls, live entertainment, a street that's usually asleep by dinner suddenly wide awake. Bring cash, wear comfortable shoes.

9. OBPC Salty Socials — Saturday, Sept. 12, 6:30 a.m., Noriega St. & the Great Highway. Ladies-only, happens every 2nd and 4th Saturday. I couldn't track down an official event page for this one (if you know it, send it my way), but the Outer Sunset community is where it lives online — cold air, good company, a reason to be up before your kids for once.

10. Opera in the Park — Sunday, Sept. 13, 1:30 p.m., Robin Williams Meadow, Golden Gate Park. Free, two hours, SF Opera's stars performing arias in the grass. Pack a blanket and a bottle of something — this has been a San Francisco tradition since 1971, and it's still the best two hours of free culture in the city.

And for date night...

Via Aurelia — Mission Rock. This is the one I'd send you to if you haven't used a babysitter in a while and want it to count. It's from the team behind Che Fico, tucked into Mission Rock with views out toward the ballpark, and the whole space leans into old-world Tuscany — vaulted ceilings, sandstone, frescoed walls, the kind of lighting that makes everyone look good. Order the tortelli Mugellani, do the multicourse menu if you're feeling it, and let it be dinner-only and no rush. 4.6 stars on OpenTable and it's dinner-only, which tells you everything about the vibe they're going for.
